A three-week-old premature baby died when she was abandoned in an incubator at the Malindi Subcounty Hospital.

Medics reportedly told the mother to take her to Malindi Tawfiq Hospital, a private facility.

They then removed the life saving machines and joined their colleagues in the strike

The mother was required to pay Sh11,000 per day at the private hospital, which she couldn’t afford.

The baby died on Wednesday morning at the Tawfiq Hospital, where she had been taken after the county government agreed to pay the money.

Malindi Subcounty medical superintendent Dr Ajawi said the death occurred due to confusion of transferring the baby.

Speaking in his office, he said the child stayed out of the incubator for more than one hour.

“The baby died because of exposure to cold. She weighed 1.2kg,” he said.

Ajawi said when the doctors strike started, medical personnel recommended that she be taken to a private hospital.

“We had only two nurses who could not attend to her full time. Her condition required that she get full attention 24 hours,” he said.
